Mahindra Racing team’s Pascal Wehrlein: Bern will feel like a second home

The Bern E-Prix is the next race on the 2018/19 ABB FIA Formula E Championship calendar. In some ways, it will feel like a second home race because I have been living in Switzerland for the last two years. Bern is actually closer to where I grew up in Germany than Berlin, but Berlin will always be my home E-Prix.

If I had to describe the Bern street circuit in five words it would be: uphill, downhill, fast, tight and bumpy. I think there are a couple of sections on the track where it looks really tight; only one car can fit through. There is a potential to have a red flag here if there is an incident because the circuit will become blocked – a bit like what we saw at round seven in Rome.

We have been looking at the weather forecast for the race weekend. At the moment the forecast is mixed, so if the temperature is below 25 degrees, I think there will be very little impact on the race strategy. Anything hotter than 25 degrees and this could cause some battery temperature saving, but let’s wait and see what comes our way. There are only three races left in my rookie season – including the upcoming Bern E-Prix – and I think it has been a very positive and happy experience with lots of learnings along the way. We have had a couple of occasions where we have narrowly missed getting the best possible result, including some race wins, but there has also been pole positions and a podium.

We know the speed is there but as with all tight tracks, qualifying is going to play a part in the race result. And you can help as well by voting for me in FANBOOST and giving me an extra power boost that can be used when we go green in Bern. https://fanboost.fiaformulae.com
