BMW X3 and X5 petrol variants launched

After launching the 5 Series and 3 Series in petrol guise, its the SUVs turn to go the gasoline way at BMW India. The X3 xDrive28i xLine and X5 xDrive35i Design Pure Experience variants have been quietly launched by the German carmaker in the Indian market, as the future of diesels looms under the clouds of uncertainty.

The X3 is powered by a 2-litre engine while the X5 gets a much bigger 3-litre petrol unit. Both the SUVs are available only with one variant and are capable of hitting 100kmph in 6.5 seconds flat. The X3’s petrol unit develops 241bhp of power and 350Nm of torque while the X5’s engine churns out 301bhp and 400Nm. Because of the additional mass on the X5, the X3 can match up to its bigger, when it comes to the performance. Available with BMW’s xDrive AWD system, both the SUVs share the 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Both the SUVs will be manufactured at BMW India’s Chennai plant, thus keeping the costs in check. Priced at Rs 54.9 lakh (X3) and Rs 73.5 lakh (X5), the BMWs go up against the likes of Mercedes-Benz’s wide range of SUVs (GLC, GLE and GLS), Audis (Q5 and Q7), Jaguar F-Pace and even the latest entrant, the Porsche Macan R4.
