The ‘A-Class’ of the SUVs, as Mercedes-Benz likes to call it; the GLA is the smallest SUV of their line-up. On the outside, it now comes with vinyl decals, chrome side skirts, redesigned 18-inch alloys and an all new gray shade. On the inside, there’s an 8-inch infotainment system screen with Bluetooth integration along with ‘Activity Edition’ floor mats.
Mechanically, there have been no modifications whatsoever. The GLA is still powered by a 2.1-litre diesel unit that churns out 123bhp of power and 350Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed gearbox. Mercedes-Benz claims to have added an off-road engineering package to the car.
At the launch, Roland Folger, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes Benz India commented, “Mercedes-Benz’s SUV portfolio witnessed a strong demand since its introduction and grew over 100% in the last couple of years. This car was a key addition to our SUV portfolio as it not only generated volumes for us, but also opened the SUV segment to a much younger customer base. With the launch of the GLA 220d 4MATIC Activity Edition; we expect the volumes to scale even further and add more value to the consumer. We are confident that the GLA 220d 4MATIC Activity Edition will continue Mercedes-Benz’s dominance in the luxury SUV segment in India.”
Mercedes-Benz has already managed to sell more than 3,500 units of the GLA and with the addition of the all-wheel drive option in the midst of the upcoming festive season; the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Volvo S60 Cross Country will have to up their game to outclass the Mercedes.
