Mahindra launches 1.99-litre diesels for SUVs

Mahindra has acted swiftly to the diesel engine ban on cars with 2.0-litre engine capacity and above in the Capital. The company has introduced a new engine with 1.99-litre capacity, which essentially should be smaller cylinders for the 2.2-litre units. The new engine will power the Scorpio and XUV500, and interestingly, the power output remains the same – 118bhp for the Scorpio and 138bhp for the XUV500.

Mahindra however says that the engine is new and development began in August 2014. Pravin Shah, President & Chief Executive (Automotive), Mahindra & Mahindra said, “This new engine, the development of which started in August 2014 is now ready for launch on both the New Generation Scorpio and the new XUV500. We do hope that our customers would enjoy driving these vehicles which deliver the performance of our currently on offer 2.2 litre mHawk engines”.

The SUVs with this new engine has been made available within the Delhi and NCR region to begin with to cater to existing customers and reduce the sudden impact of the ban on its dealerships.
