Datsun Redi-Go launched at Rs 2.39 lakh

Datsun India has launched its bread and butter hatch in the market at a starting price of Rs 2.39 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Redi-Go goes up against the likes of the Maruti 800 Alto, Hyundai Eon and even its own cousin, the Renault Kwid.

Based on the CMF-A platform, the small hatch shares many bits with the Renault Kwid, including the engine. The 0.8-litre unit makes 53bhp of power and 72Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed gearbox with exactly same gear ratios. But the Redi-Go has an advantage of 25kg over the Kwid. It is also smaller dimensionally, except in height. It has a ground clearance of 185mm and a boot space of 222litres. So overall, the Redi-Go has an edge over the best-seller, the Maruti Alto 800, in terms of space, just like the Kwid.

Talking about the features, the Redi-Go gets DRLs, MP3/USB/AUX audio system, front power windows, immobilizer, a 12V power outlet and a trip computer. On the safety front, it has been equipped with only driver-side airbag on the top-of-the-line S variant while none of the variants get the much required ABS option. The car has been positioned lower than the Kwid clearly and hence it loses on out on the touchscreen and the digital readout.

The ARAI claimed fuel-efficiency figure stands at 25.17kmpl but in the real world conditions, expect the figures to hover between 15 to 17kmpl.

The Redi-Go is available in five variants – D, A, T, T(O) and S. The Go and Go+ could never get rid of their cheap image and after the NCAP debacle, the sales dropped further downhill. Datsun has pinned its hopes on the Redi-Go based on the successful run the Kwid has had so far.
