Ford introduces the new EcoBlue diesel engine

Team Evo India

This is not the first time Ford is working on a compact, powerful and efficient engine. The company’s award winning EcoBoost 1-litre petrol engine is already an example. Ford have now applied the same principle to their diesel engines as well, and have revealed the all-new 2-litre EcoBlue diesel engine.

The EcoBlue engine has been developed from scratch and comes with a host of new changes compared to the EcoBoost making it more efficient and powerful than the existing 2.2-litre TDCi engine. Some of the innovations include a low-inertia turbocharger made from rocket-grade materials; a more responsive high-pressure fuel injection system and an integrated intake system using Ford’s mirror-image porting system for optimised engine breathing.

All these changes have resulted in a 13 per cent improved fuel economy and a 10 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions over its predecessor, making it Euro VI compliant. The engine will be offered in various power tunes ranging from around 100bhp to 235bhp. Developed by Ford  engineering teams in UK and Germany, initially Ford plans to test the less powerful EcoBlue engines in commercial vehicles after which it will be introduced in the passenger car segment as well. Apart from this, Ford also plan to develop a smaller 1.5-litre EcoBlue engine as well, that would be suitable for the compact cars sold by the company in India.
