Matter Motor Works Pvt. Ltd. made headlines when it launched the Matter Aera which was India’s first Manual Electric Motorbike with a four-speed gearbox. It has now pivoted from a product to a platform approach, incorporating an AI-Defined vehicles (AIDV) strategy to ensure its future is secure. A strategy that its rival Ather has adopted as well. The advantages of this approach are the continuous evolution of the products that spawn out of this platform.

Evolution is key

Al-Defined vehicles (AIDV) is an evolution of the Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is deeply incorporated in every function. Transforming every part from a tool to an intelligent, constantly evolving and learning entity that gets better the more you use it, with time. This tech-first move will prove to be an inflection point in the evolution of electric two-wheelers.

This allows Matter to leverage intelligence as opposed to just hardware. This technology can be scaled over the next 36-48 months and will see notable improvement in performance, efficiency, safety, and lifecycle value. This will also allow the use of new and alternative materials that will be sustainable and future-ready.

With Technology Day 3.0, Matter has pivoted from being an EV manufacturer to a deep-tech company. This will ensure there are changes in the way it engineers and conceives its products.

AERA laid the groundwork

Matter was always at the forefront of innovation, for instance, with AERA, the company delivered multiple industry-first features:

Hypershift gearbox, for a more engaging drive. Liquid-cooled motor and battery, breaking long-standing thermal ceilings in E2Ws. Cell and pack innovations, enabling improved repairability, laser-welded integrity, and higher power density.

MDVS v EDVS v SDVS v AIDVS

Here are the different types of architectures that exist in the industry

Mechanically Defined Vehicles (MDVS) - The performance and behaviour in mechanically defined vehicles are fixed at the time of production

Electronically Defined Vehicles (EDVS) - Controls improve through electronics

Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVS) - Vehicle functions can be updated through OTR and software updates

Artificial Intelligence-Defined Vehicles (AIDVS) - The vehicle continuously evolves across the entire vehicle lifecycle

AIDVS has Intelligence sits at the core, which allows consistent real-world performance and energy efficiency, predictive reliability with lower lifetime ownership costs, continuous capability expansion through software, and deep personalisation with adaptive ride behaviour tech forward by design.

What are the advantages of AIDVS?

While Software-Defined Vehicles digitised vehicles through connectivity and updates, Matter’s AIDV architecture introduces a deeper shift, tech-forward intelligence embedded directly into control and decision layers. Here, intelligence governs how motors adapt torque and efficiency in real time, how batteries age and protect themselves, how thermal systems manage stress rather than derate performance, and how vehicles predict faults, adapt behaviour, and improve over time. Matter believes the next decade will be defined not only by AI, but equally by new materials-and by intelligence that understands and governs those materials, ahead of time. Key breakthroughs include rare-earth-free motor architectures, adaptive variable flux drives, advanced semiconductor and sensor strategies, and cell-level intelligence unlocking industry-leading battery life and consistency.

Five-Segment Product Expansion Strategy

Matter also announced a five-segment expansion roadmap, all built on a common AI-defined hardware, software, compute, and data backbone. The category of bikes will include:

1 - Naked Street Motorcycles

2 - Street Fighter Motorcycles

3 - Adventure (ADV) Motorcycles

4 - Youth-Focused Commuter Motorcycles

5 - Electric Scooters

This strategy will enable Matter to address the majority of India's two-wheeler demand spectrum through a core, scalable technology platform and will unfold in the next 36 to 48 months.
