Hyundai Sonata Hybrid makes international debut
Hyundai Motors takes yet another step in green mobility with the international launch of the Sonata Hybrid. Equipped with Active Shift Control (in-house transmission tech) Hyundai aims to enhance the driving experience while also improving on the range front. And if that wasn’t enough, the Sonata gets a solar roof system that reduces unnecessary battery discharge and improves range.
Hybrid power
Under the hood sits a Smartstream G2.0 GDi HEV engine mated to a six-speed hybrid automatic transmission. The engine on its own is capable of 149bhp and 188Nm of torque, while the hybrid motor gives it a boost of 37bhp and 205Nm of torque. The combined output of the 2-litre engine and the electric motor adds up to 192bhp of power powering the front wheels. With the ‘Active Shift Control’ technology on offer, Hyundai claims that the Sonata Hybrid can deliver a combined fuel economy of 20.1kmpl.
Why the hype around Active Shift Control?
Active Shift Control monitors gear shifts 500 times per second, precisely adjusting the transmission rotation speed for faster shift times. It applies new control logic software to the Hybrid Control Unit (HCU), which then controls the electric motor to align the rotational speeds of the engine and transmission to reduce the gearshift times by 30 per cent.
Cosmetic changes
At a glance, the hybrid looks the same as the standard Sonata with only minor but unique distinguishing features. The grille is different, and has a cross hatched cascading design while the trunk now gets a unique lip spoiler. It also comes fitted with the option of 16in and 17in alloys.
More tech
The solar roof system (with six hours of daily charging) is expected to increase travel distance by an extra 1,300km annually but that depends on the weather. The ‘Digital Key’ technology can control selected vehicle systems remotely via your smartphone’s Bluetooth connectivity. Users can lock and unlock the vehicle, activate the alarm and even start the engine remotely using this feature.
