Meet India’s most fuel efficient car – the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S580e with a WLTP certified fuel efficiency figure of 34.5kmpl. This is the absolute last car where an owner would worry about fuel efficiency, but like the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Maybach too has gone plug-in hybrid for India – and prices for the Maybach S580e start from ₹3.35 crore.

Mercedes-Maybach S580e PHEV powertrain

This luxury plug-in hybrid is powered by the M256 Evo six-cylinder petrol engine and the powertrain produces a combined system output of 577bhp and 750Nm of torque, with a claimed electric-only driving range of 92 to 98 kilometres. This is a 79bhp increase over the previous V8 – and is the same as the flat-plane crank M177 Evo V8 in the S-class. For reference the S-Class S450e, from this same engine, makes 429bhp, 680Nm, and does 0-100kmph in 5.7s The Maybach S580e does 0-100kmph in 5.1s. And top speed is 250kmph. In EV mode, the top speed is 140kmph. Which benefits immensely on the WLTP test cycle, where it delivers 34.5kmpl. In terms of charging for the PHEV powertrain, you can DC accommodate fast charging up to 60 kW and AC charging up to 11 kW. The AC wall box charger is free, small change when this car costs ₹3.35 crore.

Mercedes-Maybach S580e PHEV interior

The rear seat is what a Maybach customer is more interested in. Maybach Exclusive Nappa in crystal white or silver grey pearl, with MANUFAKTUR piano lacquer trim with flowing lines, a MANUFAKTUR roof liner in crystal white nappa leather and MANUFAKTUR seat backrest trim. Mercedes calls this Four-seat First-Class. You get a full-length business console, wireless charging, massage and ventilated seats, adaptive rear-compartment lighting, a belt bag that goes into designer belt buckles, rear MBUX remote control for the twin 11.6-inch rear screens, each with their own wireless headsets. And it fully reclines – which is better than the S-Class because the Maybach gets 180 extra millimetres added to the wheelbase while increasing overall length by 165mm. And that’s why Mercedes says the Maybach “Symbolizes a kind of status that transcends the superficial.”

MBUX Entertainment is included for three years as a Digital Extra. Not much has changed on the inside, but you now get this massive MBUX Superscreen. 12.3, 12.8, 12.3-inch screens, and your driver will love the capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel that are replaced by a proper rotary volume knob. And when you are not in the car he can turn up the Burmester 4D sound system that gets 31 speakers, 1,610 watts with 8 exciters and Dolby Atmos.

Mercedes-Maybach S580e PHEV exterior and price

There’s little to distinguish between the Maybachs except for the engine-spec badging and to manage the 5.5-metre size you get 10 degrees of rear wheel steering. You get 20-inch Maybach forged wheels with noise-optimised tyres carrying a foam absorber. Standard equipment includes a collapsible spare wheel above the load floor, unlike the European market version. The air suspension is also standard. And of course this looks like money, honey. Illuminated grille, logo projection a vehicle key in high-gloss white with an ornamental surround in high-gloss rose gold. Rose gold in headlamps. It symbolises a kind of status that transcends the superficial. It is created for those who are post-luxury in their mindset – those who have established their success and now seek something deeper – and have pockets deep enough to afford the ₹3.35 crore price tag.
