Michelin has announced local production of the Primacy 5 tyres, from their plant in Chennai. An announcement was made last year before the production was going to start, and now the products are ready. Primacy 5 has been made specifically for premium cars and SUVs, and because of local production the prices of these tyres will also go down and become significantly more affordable for the end user and will be available nationwide from August 2026.

Michelin claims that the Primacy 5 series has up to 8 meters shorter braking distance in wet conditions when new and up to 9 when it is worn. The tire is EV ready and is designed to handle the higher torque and additional weight associated with EVs, while still supporting lower fuel consumption on ICE vehicles According to Michelin, it has a 8 per cent longer tyre life, and is more comfortable due to a new tread-pattern design for better noise cancelling.

Michelin now made-in-India

Michelin tyres will now be made in India because of the significant investment by the brand in their Chennai plant, with a total investment of ₹3486 crore. Michelin’s plant in Chennai is among one of the greenest manufacturing facilities in India with a zero-carbon footprint and liquid discharge. The plant is also highly automated with only 200 employees required to run the facility, whereas normally in the industry that amount is 500.

The Primacy 5 tyre has made its debut just as the Indian car industry has seen a sudden surge towards premium SUVs, crossovers and MPVs. Since 2010 sales have gone up from 22 per cent to 53 per cent in 2025. The Primacy 5 is the perfect entry point for the brand as it is available in sizes ranging from 16 to 22 inches and will accommodate most vehicles on the road today. With pricing starting from ₹ 10,000 onwards as per size.
