Tesla reveals Model Y – Electric SUV to rival Mercedes EQC

Tesla Model Y: Dual-motor, all-wheel drive

Tesla has finally revealed their second all-electric SUV, the Model Y which is set to launch in 2020. Tesla says the Y, has more room than the 3, and is marginally lighter than the X. Interestingly, this being their latest offering, it completes the word ‘SEXY’ in their portfolio.

As per the company, the Model Y is a mid-size SUV designed to be able to take a bit of beating. It is a seven seater that is available in four different variants. The standard range variant is available in rear-wheel drive and has a range of 370km on full charge. The SUV can sprint to 96kmph in 5.9 seconds, and has a top whack of 193kmph. The long range variant can do 12km more on a full charge and is 0.4 seconds quicker to the 96kmph sprint.

The highlight of the electric  SUV is the dual-motor, all-wheel drive system which is available in Long range and performance variants. The long range AWD can cover 450km on a full charge. 96kmph comes in 4.8seconds, while it is capable of a top speed of 218kmph. The Performance variant is significantly quicker with a very respectable range. The dual-motor, all-wheel drive catapults the electric SUV to 96kmph in 3.8 seconds. It offers a total running range of 450km and top speed of 241kmph.

On the inside the Model Y is spacious, with a panoramic glass roof while the front trunk space and a split folding second row seats provide 1,868-litres of usable space. Just like the Model 3, the Model Y requires no keys, but instead connects to your smartphone for seamless entry and exit. All the variants are equipped with a single 15-inch touchscreen interface system. Model Y also connects with the Tesla Mobile app for unique, easy-to-access features like remote unlock, Summon, remote pre-conditioning, location tracking, Speed Limit Mode.
