Volkswagen will unveil the I.D. R Pikes Peak on April 22, the car which will be attempting the Pikes Peak hill climb on June 24 at the racetrack in Alès, France. The ‘R’ in the name stands for racing. Testing will begin the next day itself, to prepare for the iconic hill climb. This is the company’s first fully electric racing car.

The images of the electric racing car that you see in pictures are computer generated images which give an impression of how the car will originally look. The striking design, the big muscular wheel arches that accommodate the large wheels, the front spoiler and the massive rear wing add more to the visual drama. It sports a full LED headlight and tail light strip in the front and rear. The technical details of the all-electric sports car will be announced at the time of the unveiling.

The Pikes Peak, located near Colorado Springs in Colorado, North America, is a 19.99km stretch that ascends 1440 meters from 2862 meters to reach an altitude of 4302 meters above sea level. With hardly any barriers to stop a fall, the Pikes Peak event, also known as the ‘Race to the Clouds’,  is regarded as one of the most spectacular hill climbs and Volkswagen looks to complete the iconic hill climb in under nine minutes, with the I.D. R Pikes Peak.

French professional racing driver and current Porsche factory driver Romain Dumas will drive the car for the record attempt. Stay tuned for more updates.
