Tata iCNG — Tiago iCNG and Tigor iCNG launched at Rs 6.09 lakh and Rs 7.69 lakh respectively
It’s morning after dark! Just two days after the Safari Dark edition was launched, Tata Motors has introduced its iCNG technology, with the Tiago iCNG and Tigor iCNG that have been launched, with introductory prices starting from Rs 6.09 lakh and Rs 7.69 lakh (ex-showroom) respectively. The iCNG technology expands on Tata Motors’ plans for green mobility, working in tandem with its electric lineup. The Tata Tiago iCNG and Tigor iCNG are Rs 89,000 and Rs 90,000 more expensive than their standard models, and while the Tiago iCNG goes up against the Maruti Suzuki WagonR S-CNG, the recently-launched Maruti Suzuki Celerio S-CNG, and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna CNG, the Tigor iCNG’s sole rival seems to be the Hyundai Aura CNG.
Tata iCNG — Powertrain, Technology, and Safety
Both cars in the Tata iCNG lineup share the same 1.2-litre Revotron engine which puts out 72.4bhp at 6000rpm and 95Nm of torque at 3000rpm, which is 10bhp and 18Nm less than their petrol-only models, given that CNG does rob away some of the power of the engine, but I think we’ll wait for a road review before reserving any judgement on how they really behave. Both Tata iCNG cars can take in 35 litres of petrol and 60 litres of water filling capacity.
The Tata iCNG cars will only be offered with a five-speed manual transmission. The suspension is also said to be retuned keeping in mind the additional weight of the CNG kit. In terms of ground clearance, the Tata Tiago iCNG and Tigor iCNG stand at 168mm and 165mm respectively.
Tata Motors has also incorporated a lot of technology to keep its iCNG cars as safe as possible. For example, the engine in both cars will shut off and won’t start up unless the fuel lid is closed. Both cars can also be started in CNG mode, and the engine will automatically switch over to whichever fuel is available in more quantity. The iCNG technology can also detect leaks, at which point it will switch over to petrol automatically.
Both cars continue to receive safety features such as dual airbags, electronic brake distribution, ABS, and corner stability control.
Tata iCNG — Tata Tiago iCNG
Kicking off things for the Tata iCNG lineup is the Tata Tiago iCNG. Apart from the Midnight Plum paint scheme, the tri-arrow elements in the grille are finished in chrome, and there’s the addition of the iCNG badging. The top-end Tiago iCNG XZ+ receives equipment such as projector headlamps, a 7-inch Harman touchscreen infotainment system equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster with separate range displays for petrol and CNG, an eight-speaker surround sound system, cooled glovebox, automatic climate control, rear parking camera, dual-tone interiors, auto fold ORVMs, and more. You can buy the Tiago iCNG in five different variants — XE (Rs 6.09 lakh), XM (Rs 6.39 lakh), XT (Rs 6.69 lakh), XZ + (Rs 7.52 lakh), and the XZ+ DT (Rs 7.64 lakh, all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).
Tata iCNG — Tata Tigor iCNG
This is the Tigor’s third avatar, with Tata Motors offering it in a petrol, electric, and now the addition of the iCNG. The Tigor iCNG will be offered in three variants — the XZ (Rs 7.69 lakh), XZ+ (Rs 8.29 lakh), and the XZ+ DT (Rs 8.41 lakh). Some of the features the Tigor iCNG XZ+ shares with the Tiago iCNG XZ+ include the 7-inch touchscreen Harman system, the eight-speaker surround sound system, the digital instrument cluster, autofold ORVMs, dual-tone paint options, dual-tone interiors, automatic climate control, cooled glovebox, and height adjustable driver seat. On top of that, the Tigor iCNG XZ+ also gets rain sensing wipers, automatic headlamps, and push-button start.
