Volkswagen ID.4 showcased in China

Volkswagen created a huge buzz when they launched the ID.3 at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year. The ID.3 is heading into production soon but to keep us hooked, Volkswagen has teased the ID.4 electric crossover in concept form in China. The car is set to be production ready in 2020. Why China? Because that’s where Volkswagen will be manufacturing the ID.3 as well as the ID.4, in addition to their main plant in Germany.

The ID.4 was also showcased at Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year, albeit under very little lighting to hide most of the details. Now though the company has shown the whole car in all it’s glory although there is funky camouflage on the exterior hiding the specifics. The interior is also hidden from view by way of a blacked-out windscreen and the same camouflage across the windows. Judging by the pictures the ID.4 looks about the size of a mid-size SUV, the wheels are pushed all the way to the edges of the car with short overhangs. If the ID.3 is anything to go by, expect a tonne of space on the inside thanks to clever packaging.

The ID.4 will be pitched as a mid-size SUV. The design stays similar to its smaller ID.3 sibling but has a more aggressive front-end instead of the simple styling of the ID.3 hatchback. The ID.4 gets a lot of SUV-like styling cues with roof rails and an upright rear end which features LED tail-lights joined by a light strip along the top, a sort of signature in the Volkswagen Group of late. The car also seems to have good ground clearance, judging by the photos. The silhouette of the car is very swanky and if you ask me, VW has got the proportions spot on.

Volkswagen’s new wave of all-electric cars are housed under the ID brand. The company is betting big on electrification, they didn’t have a single combustion engine car on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show!

The company is showering us with another MEB based ID concept later this month on November 19 at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
