Arjun Maini finishes the 2021 DTM season finale at Norisring on a high
The 2021 DTM season came to an end with Race 2 at the Norisring with Arjun Maini finishing P6 after starting from P7 on the grid. Maini was helped with the carnage that happened in front of him that decided the championship title of the season. Maini had a rocky season overall but has damaged to finish P12 with 48 points in the championship fight after gaining 26 points from the final two races in the Norisring. The championship title was won by Maximilian Gotz after championship rivals Liam Lawson and Kelvin Van Der Linde retired from the race. So, with that said, let us look at how the final race of the season panned out for Arjun Maini.
Arjun showed great pace in Race 1 at the Norisring finishing second in the race. But that also meant that Maini was carrying success ballasts on his car during the race. He qualified P7 on the grid, being just two-tenths of a second slower than the race leader. Now, despite the extra weight present in his car (success ballast), Arjun had a good start off the line and managed to hold on to his position. But there was carnage on the opening lap ahead of him as Kelvin Van Der Linde took Liam Lawson out of the race after a failed attempt to overtake down in turn 1.
Mercedes-AMG Team Getspeed managed an impressive pitstop on lap 25 yet again for Arjun with a 6.65 second stop. But after the pitstop, Maini struggled to get his pace back and fell a little down the order to a potential P7. But this time, lady luck was on his side. At the front, Maximilian Gotz came in contact with Kelvin Van Der Linde and that led to Linde’s retirement. This allowed Maini to take a position and eventually end P6 on the grid.
Maini ended the season on a high after a roller coaster ride through the season. With six retirements in a 16 race season, Maini has proved his mettle in the first season at DTM. He had to face a series of bad luck, tough lessons and high-pressure drives, but he managed to come out swinging in the final stages of the season. This put Maini in a good spot for another potential contract with Mercedes-AMG Team Getspeed, should he choose to continue at DTM. Maximilian Gotz had a remarkable victory in the race which also made him win the driver’s championship over Liam Lawson with a difference of just three points.
