2024 Mercedes-AMG SL63 S E Performance has been unveiled with a plug-in hybrid

The AMG SL63 S E Performance is the most powerful production SL ever, with more than 1400Nm of torque

Mercedes-AMG has launched the SL63 S E Performance, the fifth addition to Mercedes-AMG’s E performance lineup. It retains the SL63’s 4-litre V8 biturbo engine but adds the AMG electric drive unit to make this the most powerful SL ever. The drop-top roadster also gets AMGs active ride control suspension, rear-wheel steering, and the biggest brakes of any ICE powered AMG as standard.

The SL63 S E Performance carries over the styling of its lesser siblings but gets red badging at the rear and an E Performance badge to indicate its hybrid powertrain. There's an integrated plug-in charging port under the tail light and blacked-out quad exhausts. The flagship SL rides on 20-inch AMG light-alloys with the option to upgrade to 21-inch. The ‘Manufaktur’ programme gives access to a range of modifications and optional exterior packages including various paint schemes. There is also an active rear-spoiler that can be deployed in one of five positions to increase downforce or reduce drag.

Inside the cabin, there are carbon trim pieces on the door panels and the dashboard, which features the 11.9-inch vertical infotainment system that debuted on the S-class. The MBUX contains numerous AMG and hybrid-specific displays. The ‘Manufaktur’ upholstery is a combination of Nappa leather with microcut fibre and contrasting top stitching in yellow or red. The Mercedes-AMG SL63 S E Performance retains the 2+2 seating layout, and optional AMG performance seats are available with integrated headrests, ventilation openings and three massage functions.

The Mercedes-AMG SL63 S E Performance is powered by a 4-litre V8 biturbo at the front and a plug-in hybrid motor at the rear that produces a combined output of 816bhp and 1420Nm of torque, mated to a 9-speed multi-clutch transmission. The SL63 S E Performance starts up silently in the comfort mode, but an artificial AMG start-up sound is pumped into the interior via the integrated speakers. The 4Matic+ equipped SL63 S E Performance accelerates from 0-100kmph in 2.9 seconds and tops out at 317kmph. It also gets AMG active ride control suspension with active roll stabilisation and rear-axle steering as standard equipment. The battery offers a capacity of 6.1kWh, 70kW (94bhp) continuous power and 150kW (201bhp) peak power with an EV driving mode available with a range of up to 13km. The battery regeneration gets four settings with the strongest one allowing ‘one-pedal’ driving. The driver can also choose between eight AMG driving modes ranging from ‘electric’ to ‘race’. The SL63 S E Performance comes with the largest brakes of any ICE powered AMG’s, featuring carbon ceramic brake discs and 6-piston bronze coloured brake calipers.

The SL63 S E Performance will take on the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet. The Mercedes-AMG SL63 S E Performance will be launched in 2024 but the official dates and prices for the launch haven’t been unveiled as of now.
