It’s world environment day today and what’s a better way than celebrating the launch of two electric scooters for an automotive enthusiast. Ather has susprised the entire nation by launching the 450 along with the much awaited 340. Both the scooters look more or less the same in skin though there are a couple of differences that separate them.
The 340 is powered by a 4.4kW (5.9bhp) motor that develops 20Nm of peak torque. The scooter can sprint from 0-40kmph in 5.1sec and has a maximum quoted speed is 70kmph. It is good for a total range of 60km on one full charge with the eco mode on and 50km with the eco mode switched off. The 450 on the other hand is powered by a 5.4kW (7.2bhp) motor that churns out 20.5Nm of peak torque. The scooter can sprint from 0-40kmph in 3.9sec, 0-60kmph in 9sec and has a maximum quoted speed is 80kmph. The 450 provides with a total range of 75km on one full charge with the eco mode on and 60km with the eco mode switched off.
Apart from the motor and powertrain both the scooters share everything in common. Both get a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen with inbuilt GPS, all LED headlamps, tail lamps and turn indicators. Suspension duties are handled by telescopic forks at the front and a centrally mounted monoshock unit at the rear. Braking is done by disc brake setup both at the front and the rear coupled with combined braking system.
Tarun Mehta, co-founder & CEO – “We started building electric scooters five years ago at IIT Madras and we are excited to launch not only the Ather 340, but also our higher performance flagship variant, the Ather 450. It has been designed with quick acceleration, great handling, large storage space and new-to-category features like park assist, remote diagnostics, and onboard navigation. In the last five years we have not only built the scooter, but an ecosystem for an electric vehicle future. Be it the suppliers and partners who were entering the EV market, the charging infrastructure that had to be set up for consumers and the engineering talent itself to build the products. Between the Ather 450 & Ather 340 launching and AtherGrid being up and running in Bengaluru, we are really looking forward to expanding into Chennai & Pune in the coming months. These are exciting times to be a part of the industry.”
Co-founded in 2013 by IIT graduates – Tarun Mehta and Swapnil Jain, Ather Energy is one the few hardware startups in India.
