Maruti showed off the Japanese-spec Jimny with the 1.5-litre petrol and Suzuki’s All-Grip 4WD technology
Soon after Maruti Suzuki pulled the plug on the trusty, rugged Gypsy, there were speculations of the Jimny being its successor in India. The hopes went higher when we heard that Maruti Suzuki would showcase the Jimny at the Auto Expo 2020. And they did!
The ‘Jungle Green’ Jimny seen at Maruti Suzuki’s pavllion is the fourth-gen Japanese-spec. The goal behind showcasing the Jimny is to assess the response the compact off-roader gets from the crowd at the Auto Expo.
The Jimny is Suzuki’s flagship model across 194 counties and regions. The Jimny is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that makes 100.5bhp of power at 6000rpm and 130Nm of torque at 4000rpm available in two transmission options – a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic. The Jimny is equipped with Suzuki’s All-Grip PRO, a part-time 4WD system with a low-range transfer gear. The body sits on a ladder frame and gets a 3-link rigid axle suspension for improved functionality. In terms of dimensions the Jimny is a sub-4m compact SUV, at 3550mm long and 1730mm high, with a wheelbase of 2250mm.
Its functionality has been appreciated and it was awarded the ‘urban car winner’ in the 2019 World Car Awards announced at the New York International Motor Show in April’2019.
Speaking about the Suzuki Jimny, Kenichi Ayukawa, managing director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India said, “Suzuki Jimny with its compact design and superb off-road capabilities is an engineering marvel and speaks volumes about Suzuki’s engineering capabilities. Masterfully designed to ensure reliable driving and ease of handling, the Suzuki Jimny is a favourite amongst adventure enthusiasts. Jimny has been developed on the basis of thorough research, assessing the expectations and requirements of professional users.”
