Integrating modernity into a design philosophy from the 1960s seemed to be Triumph’s aim for the Bonneville T40. While the silhouette, forming with a round headlamp, sculpted teardrop fuel tank, spoke wheels, and a twin-shock rear suspension, is a stark image of the classic Bonneville, the performance, technology, and features are where the T40 makes a leap. With the prices starting at ₹2.8 lakh, here’s a detailed look into the Triumph T40 and T40 Black.

Triumph Bonneville T40 engine

The Bonneville T40's engine

At the heart of the Bonneville T40 and T40 Black is a 350cc TR Series engine. While this engine has become quite common with Triumph’s lineup, it is specifically tuned for the Bonneville T40 with a revised cylinder head to give it increased torque in the lower rev range. As Triumph claims, it has an intuitive throttle response owing to the torque-rich delivery.

28.6bhp at 7,000rpm and 31.2Nm at 5,500rpm are the claimed figures from Triumph. The bore x stroke is 89.0mm and 56.1mm, with a 12.1:1 compression ratio. This is paired with a six-speed transmission.

Triumph Bonneville T40 design and specifications

The T40 takes inspiration from the classic Bonneville design, incorporating spoke wheels, the teardrop tank, round headlamps, and the twin-shock rear suspension.

It has a hybrid spine/perimeter, tubular steel frame with a steel twin-sided swingarm. While the T40 features chrome-finished mirrors and a grab hoop, combined with brushed aluminium heel guards, the T40 Black has painted components, powder-coated black for an overall darker treatment.

The T40 comes in two-tone paint schemes in multiple colours: Meriden Blue, Aegean Blue, and Fusion White. It has a hand-painted coach lining and classically shaped aluminium engine covers. Meanwhile, the rubber knee pads on the side of the tank complete the look.

Meanwhile, the T40 Black, which is a darker edition of the same bike, comes in two colour schemes: Matt Pewter Grey and Matt Phantom Black.

The length of the motorcycle spans 2120mm on a 1418mm wheelbase, with a 790mm seat height (reducible by 20mm to 770mm). It has a 25.4-degree rake, and the declared wet weight sits at 195kg.

The spoked wheels are tubed, with 18-inch at the front and 17-inch at the rear. The 43mm front fork suspension provides a 130mm wheel travel, similar to the twin-shock rear; however, the latter comes with pre-load adjustment.

There is a single 310mm fixed disc with a twin-piston axial calliper in the front. Meanwhile, the rear gets a single 255mm fixed disc and a single-piston floating calliper.

Triumph Bonneville T40 features

The Triumph Bonneville has a class-leading (as claimed by Triumph) four-inch circular TFT display. It has phone connectivity, full-map navigation (powered by the new Triumph Navigation app), and even music control. Important information, including the gear position, indicators, ambient temperature, and fuel level, is displayed prominently. Meanwhile, five customisable widgets can be configured and accessed through the backlit left-hand switch cube.

The Bonneville T40’s TFT display also has a ‘Heritage Mode.’ When turned on, the standard screen layout is replaced by an analogue-style display which is inspired by the traditional Bonneville.a

T40 features five riding modes, three of which are pre-configured: road, rain, and eco, and the remaining two are customisable as per the rider.

It also features cruise control, lean-sensitive Optimised Cornering ABS, and Optimised Cornering Traction Control to deliver better rider assistance and functionality.

The Triumph Bonneville T4

The Bonneville T4 is a stripped-down, more budget-friendly option in the Triumph Bonneville Series. While it has the same performance as the T40, it misses out on the TFT display, getting a four-inch LCD display, instead. The full-map navigation, although absent, is replaced by a turn-by-turn navigation. Moreover, while it does get dual-channel ABS, it misses out on cornering ABS, and it also lacks Cruise Control.

The result is a starting price of ₹2.55 lakh. It is available in three solid colours: Phantom Black, Carnival Red, and Competition Green.

As per all the claims from Triumph, the Bonneville T4, T40 and the T40 Black are inspired by the 1960s classic design, yet have all the modern features a rider requires. The price of both variants, meanwhile, is yet to be revealed.
