Mercedes has revealed a special edition of the G63 AMG to celebrate 55 years of AMG

The AMG badge has always stood for ballistic performance, and to celebrate 55 years of the brand, Mercedes-Benz has revealed a pretty special car — The Mercedes-AMG G63 “Edition 55”. This edition of the G-Wagen gets several new features all around, celebrating the historical milestone that AMG has achieved.

This special edition of the G63 has been given two paint jobs to celebrate this historic milestone – obsidian black metallic and ‘G manufaktur’ opalite white bright paint. Compared to the 20-inch wheels which are standard on the G, the Edition 55 gets 22-inch AMG forged wheels with a cross-spoke design with a shiny rim. These wheels are finished in a stealthy metallic grey paint. There is also a smattering of AMG emblems all over the car, along with a fuel filler cap finished in chrome to remind you this is not an ordinary G350d.

To give an image of performance, the interiors of the new G63 get a sporty black and red colour scheme. The AMG seats are upholstered in two-tone Nappa leather, and also present are velour black floor mats with red stitching. The steering also gets special AMG and 55 badges with unique stitching, and the door sills also get red illuminated AMG lettering to welcome the occupants, along with the stainless steel door rims. And like any AMG, there’s enough and more carbonfibre around the cabin to remind you of the brand’s sporty intentions.

Mercedes-AMG G63 “Edition 55” engine

The Mercedes AMG G63 “Edition 55” has the same engine as the standard SUV, a twin-turbocharged 4-litre V8 that produces 577bhp of power and 850Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to all four wheels via Mercedes’ 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The G-Wagen hasn’t softened with age and it continues to get three differential locks.

Mercedes-AMG has only revealed the international prices for the Edition 55 and there’s no official confirmation about this SUV being India-bound. That said, the G63 AMG “Edition 55” trim will likely cost an estimated ₹12 to 15 lakh over and above the standard G63 AMG. Even after 55 years, Mercedes-AMG is very keen to highlight that the AMG brand will continue to be focused on its character as the brand goes forward into the electric era. And ever since we got a peek at the all-electric G-Wagen, the Concept EQG, there’s no reason to doubt that the G-Wagens of the future will be equally exciting!
