The 2027 Tesla Roadster gets a new exterior design, 0.8-second acceleration time, and even full flight tech
Tesla's second-generation Roadster has finally arrived in its aviation-inspired, wedgy form, referencing the SR-71 Blackbird and F-35, with hints of iconic sports coupes from the late 1970s. The jaw-dropping unveiling revealed that this Tesla Coupe is ready to fly. The live demonstration involved a Roadster Rocket driving up a curved ramp, travelling upside down, and launching into the air using rocket thrusters, performing a mid-air flip, and landing back on its wheels. Here’s what we know so far.
2027 Tesla Roadster equipment, variants and performance
It is offered across three variants – Performance, Thrust, and Rocket. The Rocket variant is a single-seater with a full flight system including cold-gas thrusters positioned along its perimeter. The remaining variants are capable of seating two and pack a multi-mode suction system capable of 2 g's, along with acceleration thrusters at the rear only, which Tesla has sourced from SpaceX (Thrust variant). Tesla claims it can go from 0-96.5kmph in 0.8 seconds and can hit a top speed of over 370kmph.
It also gets an integrated fan system with two modes and inboard suspension. The cabin gets the familiar yoke-shaped steering wheel with the central touchscreen now angled towards the driver.

In the 9 years since the Roadster 2.0 Concept unveiling, the design of the production-ready model has taken a great departure from the flowing curves towards an angular and wedge-like shape reminiscent of the Cybertruck. Tesla says that the design has been heavily inspired by the SR-71 Blackbird and the F-35. There are butterfly doors and active aero elements such as a deployable wing with two modes – High Drag and High Downforce.
In typical Tesla fashion, you get a light bar in the nose, but there’s also a pair of pop-down headlights flanking the bonnet. In profile, it features a low-slung sports car stance, which is highlighted by the double six-spoked wheels with aero covers. At the rear, the Thrust variant gets a set of four thruster-exit pipes added in the lower diffuser, which also gives a peek at the fat rear tyres. The upper section houses a light bar serving as the taillight.

Tesla Motors has opened reservations for its latest model in the USA across the three variants mentioned above. There’s no word yet on its availability in India.
