A limited edition M2 pays tribute to the 1973 BMW 2002 turbo, with hand-painted stripes and 473bhp

Every once in a while, a car company looks into its own history and pulls out something worth celebrating. BMW India has done exactly that with the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition, which opens for pre-orders today across its dealer network. It is the first time this car has been offered in India, and it will be sold in strictly limited numbers on a first-come, first-served basis. If you want one, you should not wait too long.

A Tribute To A Troublemaker

The car is a modern homage to the BMW 2002 turbo, which arrived in 1973 at a strange time. The world was in the middle of an oil crisis, and nobody expected a company to launch a fast, turbocharged sports sedan. BMW did it anyway. The 2002 turbo made 167bhp, went past 200kmph, and became the first series-production turbocharged passenger car in BMW's own words. That one decision shaped performance cars for decades. The new M2 makes nearly three times the power of the original, which says a lot about how far things have come.

Looks That Know Their History

Our first look at the car in pictures shows a car that is hard to ignore. It is finished only in Alpine White, and the contrast makes everything pop. The black bonnet carries the famous reversed "turbo" script, and the story behind it is a good one. On the original car, the lettering was written backwards so the driver ahead could read it in their mirror, a cheeky warning to anyone who thought of staying in front. Here, it sits on a black power dome, with the same sense of humour.

Then there are the stripes. The hand-painted BMW Motorsport colours run from the front corner, across the bonnet, and carry on over the carbon fibre roof and tailgate. They are the real star of the car, and the fact that they are painted by hand makes each car feel like it was made for someone. A special "turbo" emblem sits under the M2 badge, and a carbon fibre rear spoiler finishes off the look. Buyers can add optional 19- and 20-inch Gold Bronze M Performance forged wheels, and in the pictures, the bronze against the white paint looks fantastic.

Inside, It Gets Serious

The cabin matches the exterior, and it feels like it was built for a track day more than a school run. There are M Carbon bucket seats, an M Alcantara steering wheel and carbon fibre trim all around. One small detail we like is the "turbo" badge on the centre cupholder cover, a little reminder in a place you will see every day that this is not a regular M2.

The Heart Is Unchanged

Underneath all this, BMW has left the engine alone, and honestly, it did not need any help. The 3-litre six-cylinder makes 473bhp and gets the car from 0 to 100kmph in 3.7 seconds. The top speed is limited to 250kmph, and it goes up to 285kmph with the optional M Driver's Package. It is a small coupe with a big engine and All Wheel Drive, which is a recipe that has made the M2 so loved since it first came out.

Pricing and the number of cars on offer have not been announced yet.
