Stellantis to build new vehicles on Tata vehicle architecture and tech

The agreement signed covers technology and product development, with vehicles, including EVs, to be made in Pune for more than 50 markets

Admin

A Jeep Compass built on a Tata Sierra platform? Who would have ever believed such an idea? And while we may not see that exact story unfold, fact is that Stellantis India and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) have jointly announced that Tata Motors will be offering vehicle technology and platforms to Stellantis to develop its own range of vehicles, both for ICE vehicles and EVs. The agreement was signed between Stellantis India and TMPV, including its subsidiary Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEM).

What The Agreement Covers

Under the deal, TMPV will give Stellantis access to its advanced product technology and vehicle architecture. Stellantis will then build on this using its own product development and engineering teams in India, with the aim of creating vehicles for more than 50 global markets. That means adapting them to different customers, rules and driving conditions around the world.

Vehicles developed under the agreement will be manufactured in India at Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited (FIAPL), the equal joint venture between TMPV and Stellantis. The February agreement was about exploring cooperation in manufacturing, engineering and supply chain. This one turns that intention into a specific collaboration on product technology and architecture.

Why It Matters

The two companies say the collaboration will use India's engineering strengths and manufacturing scale to speed up export plans, and will make India a key part of Stellantis' global production network. In other words, India is not just a place where these cars will be sold, it is becoming a place where they are designed, built and sent out to the world.

Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, said the partnership has grown steadily over more than two decades, and called the agreement an important next step. He said it reflects the strength of TMPV's capabilities in vehicle technology and architecture, and that the aim is to create vehicles engineered and made in India for customers here and around the world.

Tianshu Xin, Chief Operating Officer of Stellantis Asia Pacific, said the agreement will help Stellantis develop competitive vehicles in India and expand its exports across international markets. Xin also said it strengthens India's role as a manufacturing and development hub for the company.

The Plant Behind It

FIAPL runs an integrated vehicle and powertrain facility in Ranjangaon, Pune. It currently builds the Jeep Compass, Meridian, Grand Cherokee and Wrangler, with the last two assembled from knocked down kits. The same plant also makes Tata's Nexon, Altroz and Curvv, along with engines, gearboxes and electric motors. It already exports to markets such as Japan and South Africa.

Stellantis brings 14 car brands to the table, including Jeep, Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat and Maserati, along with a presence across Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. Combined with Tata's technology, the two companies say this forms a strong base to develop and build vehicles in India for the world.
