Maruti Suzuki has commissioned a 1MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its Kharkhoda manufacturing plant in an effort to improve its energy utilization and reduce manufacturing-related emissions and costs.

A Pilot Project

The company states that the system has been integrated into the plant’s internal electricity distribution network and is a pilot project. The BESS system will store surplus electricity that is generated by the plant’s 20MWp solar power plant, which was commissioned in 2025.

The BESS system will store the surplus electricity that is generated by the solar power plant during holidays and low-demand hours, and will make it available when required. Maruti Suzuki has estimated that the battery system will have a lifecycle of around 15 years and will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 54 tonnes annually.
