Renault’s plans in India

A new sub-4m SUV with hybrid powertrain and an EV, a possible super hybrid system, CNG, and even a 7-seater version for the Duster. Renault has an exciting future ahead

Renault India Group CEO shares the Renault's vision which will come to fruition by 2030

Renault's India ambition for the decade ahead is anchored around seven cars – and the company has been clear that this means seven distinct models, not variants. A strong hybrid version of an existing nameplate does not count separately within that number; each slot represents a genuinely new product.

To anchor its positioning, Renault has identified three key growth segments in India – what the company internally calls "growth bubbles" – where it intends to concentrate future product launches.

  • Sub-4m - Upper end of the compact segment
  • ~4.3m - Mid-size sweet spot
  • 4.6–4.7m - Premium SUV territory

On body styles, Renault sees little future for sedans in India, noting their declining global relevance outside the US, China, and South Korea. For this market, the company believes SUVs remain by far the better fit – offering the ground clearance, space, and practicality that Indian customers prioritise.

Renault Bridger & Duster

The most eagerly awaited newcomer is the Bridger – Renault's sub-4m SUV, which is confirmed for launch by end-2027. The Bridger will debut a brand-new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which will be locally manufactured in India. The car will definitely receive a hybrid variant, and a CNG option is also under active consideration.

Bridger EV: Renault has confirmed that the first electric vehicle in its India lineup will be based on the Bridger platform, arriving a few months after the combustion model – so expect it around late 2027.

On the Duster front, the current-generation model's hybrid variant remains on track for a Diwali 2026 launch. A potential seven-seater Duster is also in the conversation, but Renault offered no confirmed timeline for that derivative.

Renault emphasised that it intends to evolve the new Duster progressively over its lifecycle – adding features and powertrains over time rather than front-loading everything at launch. Early reception has reportedly been very strong, with word-of-mouth described as particularly positive.

Two New Platforms, One New Engine

Underpinning Renault's India expansion are two distinct platforms, each serving a different part of the range.

RGEP Platform: Replaces the ageing CMF-A architecture for the Kiger and Triber. We can expect to see these launches in the upcoming months. Critically, all RGEP-based models will be available with factory-fitted CNG from launch. For the Triber specifically, Renault hinted at a new powertrain – likely a 1.0-litre turbo – though full details were withheld.

RGMP Platform: The more sophisticated of the two, RGMP supports a full spectrum of electrification: strong hybrids, EVs, electrified rear axles for AWD capability, and more. Those last features remain under evaluation rather than confirmed, but the architecture is clearly designed with maximum flexibility in mind.

Electrification Strategy

Renault's electrification philosophy for India is best described as deliberately non-committal – in the best possible sense. Rather than betting on a single technology, the company intends to remain flexible across strong hybrids, full EVs, CNG, and a fourth path it calls the "super hybrid."

A super hybrid, as Renault describes it, features a significantly larger battery capable of delivering around 200km of electric-only range. While it shares some surface-level characteristics with a plug-in hybrid, the underlying approach is technically different – more akin to a range-extender architecture than a conventional PHEV. The concept is still under investigation, with no final product decision yet made.

For the various segments in India, here is how Renault currently maps its fuel strategy:

  • Strong Hybrid - 4m – 4.7m segment

Strong hybrids are positioned as the core solution in the mid-to-large SUV space, where fuel efficiency gains are most meaningful for buyers.

  • CNG - Smaller cars

CNG already commands over 20% of the Indian market, making it impossible to ignore at the entry level. The RGMP platform also technically supports CNG in larger vehicles, though those decisions remain pending.

  • Full EV - Bridger-based · Late 2027

The EV path begins with the Bridger, arriving shortly after the combustion model – giving Renault its first fully electric product in India within this decade.

Manufacturing, Exports & Retail

On the manufacturing side, Renault reports that its Indian facility is operating close to 500,000 units of annual capacity. At present, there are no concerns about hitting a ceiling – production sharing with Nissan (which uses the same plant) is managed flexibly based on demand forecasts. Should volumes surge, Renault says it is prepared to invest further in additional capacity.

On the export front, Renault views the prospective India–EU Free Trade Agreement as a positive development, expecting it to ease the movement of finished vehicles and components alike. The company acknowledged, however, that any tangible impact on its long-term export targets will take time to materialise.

At the retail end, Renault is investing in upgrading its dealership network – targeting a more premium in-showroom experience to better align with the upmarket direction its product range is heading.
