We all know how important engine oil service is for a car. We recommend changing it every 10,000km, and using high quality synthetic oils like 0W30, 0W40, 5W30, 5W40, depending on your car and usage. But have you ever thought about what happens to the old black engine oil filled with sediments and particles that has been removed from the car? That’s the kind of toxic waste that should immediately be discarded and not come in contact with fresh waterbodies. To ensure this is carried out, Petronas Lubricants India and Tata Motors have joined hands to pilot a structured system for collecting and recycling used automotive lubricants.

The two companies have signed an MoU to launch the initiative across Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Used engine oil is classified as hazardous waste and, if disposed of improperly, can have significant environmental consequences. The pilot project aims to create a traceable process that manages used lubricants from collection and storage all the way to recycling. The recycled oil can then be processed into re-refined base oil, which can be used in the production of fresh lubricants. Under the collaboration, Petronas Lubricants India will oversee the collection and transportation of used oil through authorised channels and ensure it reaches registered recyclers. Tata Motors, meanwhile, will utilise its extensive authorised service network to facilitate collection and encourage responsible disposal practices among customers and service partners.

If successful, the programme could provide a practical roadmap for managing used lubricants more responsibly while reducing environmental impact and improving the recovery of valuable resources that would otherwise go to waste.
