Hyundai adds a new BS6-compliant diesel to Elantra’s lineup

The 1.5-litre diesel will be available in SX and SX(O) trims, with prices starting at Rs 18.7 lakh

Hyundai is one of the few manufacturers that have been committed to diesels even after the BS6 wave washed away most others, including Maruti-Suzuki. Hyundai has not only added the BS6-compliant 1.5-litre U2 CRDI diesel engine to the Elantra range, but have also omitted the base ‘S’ petrol variant, while significantly reducing prices of the SX and SX(O) petrol variants.

The 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 113bhp and 250Nm of torque and can be had with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic depending on the variant. The diesel variant of the new Hyundai Creta has the same engine under its hood, and if that's anything to go by, it should offer great refinement and fuel economy.

SS Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., said, “ Hyundai Elantra is a true global sedan and finest expression of authentic design by Hyundai Motor Studio. As a Smart Mobility Solutions Provider, Hyundai has been leading the way with cleaner and efficient technologies such as our line-up of BS6 powertrains. We are enhancing customer delight on Elantra with the addition of fun to drive and powerful 1.5-litre U2 CRDi Diesel BS6 powertrains. Additionally, Hyundai is also providing an improved value proposition for existing petrol BS6 powertrain options on Elantra.”

The prices for the diesel SX variant paired with a six-speed manual transmission start at Rs 18.7 lakh while the diesel SX (O) is available with an automatic and is priced at Rs 20.65 lakh. In terms of the petrol variants, the entry point is now the manual SX variant, but it has become affordable by Rs 89,000. The automatic SX petrol variant starts at Rs 18.7 lakh, Rs 79,000 more affordable than before. The top-spec petrol is the SX (O) automatic, priced at Rs 19.55 lakh, Rs 84,000 more affordable than before. You can take a look at the full revised price list below.
