Mahindra and Ford ink pact to develop SUVs, an electric vehicle and ‘Connected Car Solutions’

Mahindra and Ford Motor Company have embarked on a new venture to jointly develop SUVs, electric vehicles and connected car solutions. Both companies announced their alliance last year in September and after 6 months, they have signed five MoUs to forge their alliance.

Both companies are eyeing the SUV space, where they will be developing a mid size SUV that will be built on Mahindra’s platform, though it will be sold independently by both companies under their individual brand names.  This will also see them sharing powertrain and other mechanical components. Mahindra will also supply its powertrains to Ford’s product range. This alliance provides a win-win situation for both companies as Ford’s global outreach would benefit Mahindra while the former gets to utilise Mahindra’s expertise in utility vehicles for the Indian market and focus on enhancing Ford’s manufacturing and distribution network in the country. Both companies will also be working on an electric vehicle along with connected mobility solutions that are fast emerging globally.

On taking the alliance with Ford to the next step, Dr Pawan Goenka, managing director, Mahindra, said, “Both teams are working together on joint development areas in keeping with industry requirements and leveraging mutual strengths. We are excited about the synergies unveiled through this collaboration and the potential opportunities it will bring.”

Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president and president of global markets, said, “Ford is committed to offering the best vehicles, technologies and services that fit the lifestyles and preferences of Indian consumers. Listening to our customers and incorporating their future needs is the core premise of this collaboration. With utility vehicles and electrification as key focus areas, we are glad to see the progress our two companies have made.”
