Mercedes-Benz launches updated AMG Coupe variant of its luxe-barge at Rs 2.55 crore

The S 63 AMG Coupe

The S 63 coupe has been given a more aggressive make over and is launched in India at Rs 2.55 crore (ex-showroom). It shares exterior bits from the ever so mean AMG GTR and the interiors are similar to all the new AMG cars. The motor is also tweaked to improve performance and efficiency, mated to a 9-speed auto coupled with all wheel drive.

The flagship sports saloon is powered by the same 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 powerplant that we tested on the E 63 S AMG that was launched recently in India. To quicken reaction times and eliminate lag Mercedes-Benz has adopted the twin-scroll technology and a ‘hot-vee’ turbocharger arrangement. The engine uses a cylinder de-activation system to improve the fuel efficiency in Comfort mode. The V8 motor is mated to a 9-speed automatic with the drive powering all four wheels.

The numbers

The engine puts out 603bhp, but the torque figures have been bumped up to 900Nm over the E 63 S AMG to cater for the additional mass. The S63 AMG sprints to 100kmph in 3.5sec (0.1sec slower than the E 63 S AMG) and has a top speed of 250kmph (electronically limited). The top speed can be bumped up to 300kmph with the AMG Driver’s Pack which is an optional add-on. The S63 AMG boasts quite a bit of luxury and safety tech. The interior is similar to that of other AMG cars, having a flowing twin-touchscreen layout on the dash. The S63 AMG gets AMG sports seats wrapped in soft nappa leather. Other features are AMG specific infotainment graphics and an AMG steering wheel.

The design

The S 63 AMG coupe gets updated and aggressive front bumpers with larger air intakes and aero sculpting similar to AMG’s Green Hell, the AMG GTR Coupe.  It gets the signature Panamericana grill finished in chrome which will be seen in almost all the AMG cars. The rear bumper boasts quad exhausts and is in sync with the aggressive lines of the car. It will also get 19 inch forged lightweight alloy wheels. The Porsche Panamera Turbo and the BMW 8 Series Coupe will be the closest rivals to the S63 AMG coupe.
