Pirelli and BKT sign a deal to build premium tyres in India
Up to 800,000 Pirelli-branded tyres by 2030, and a joint venture waiting in the wings

Some partnerships are about the long game, and this one is clearly playing it. Pirelli and Balkrishna Industries Ltd, better known as BKT, have signed a strategic agreement to go after the Indian car tyre market, which both companies describe as one of the most dynamic in the world. For a brand that currently has only a commercial presence in India, it is a big step. Here is a closer look at the Pirelli and BKT agreement, from the numbers behind it to what it could mean for Indian drivers.
Pirelli and BKT Agreement Explained
The deal comes in two phases. The first is an off-take agreement, under which BKT will produce up to 800,000 Pirelli-branded tyres by 2030 in one of its newly constructed plants, built to Pirelli’s own technology and quality standards. The second phase is the bigger one. Subject to certain conditions, it envisages a 50-50 joint venture and a new plant dedicated to high-value car tyres, carrying both the Pirelli and BKT brands. The tyres would serve India and other international markets.
Why Pirelli Is Looking at India
The numbers explain the interest. Car registrations in India are estimated to grow by 5 to 7 per cent every year from 2025 to 2030, and the premium car tyre market is seen growing almost fivefold. Pirelli focuses on high-value tyres, and Marco Tronchetti Provera, the executive chairman, said India is taking an ever more central role in the global automotive industry. Pirelli CEO Andrea Casaluci was even more direct, saying the time is right to “catch that wave”.
Pirelli and BKT, Two Very Different Players
Pirelli was founded in Milan in 1872 and is one of the world’s largest tyre makers, with 18 plants in 12 countries and the only focus on the consumer market among its peers. It has competed in motorsport since 1907 and has been the exclusive Global Tyre Partner of Formula One since 2011, with a contract running through 2028. Its flagship technology is Cyber Tyre, a system that collects data from sensors embedded in the tyre and passes it to the vehicle in real time.
BKT, founded in 1987 and headquartered in Mumbai, is a leading off-highway tyre manufacturer with over 3,600 products sold in more than 160 countries. It has recently announced its entry into the two-wheeler, passenger car and commercial vehicle segments in India, and this deal supports its expansion into passenger car tyres. Rajiv Poddar, Joint Managing Director of BKT, said that when a brand like Pirelli chooses BKT, it recognises the manufacturing strength the company has built over decades.
What the Pirelli and BKT Deal Means for India
For drivers, the headline is more choice at the premium end of the market, and Pirelli says the partnership will contribute to the growing premiumisation of the Indian tyre market. The release does not mention specific tyre models, prices or a launch date, so it is too early to say what will reach Indian showrooms first. For now, it is a clear signal that two serious names in the tyre world are betting on India for the long haul.
