Porsche reveals new 911 ahead of LA Auto Show
The Los Angeles Auto Show is all set to begin this weekend and Porsche has revealed images of the new 911 days before the event. Hardcore 911 enthusiasts will be happy to know that the silhouette of the new 911 remains the same even after 55 years since the debut of the first 911. However, Porsche has made subtle styling tweaks and thrown in some new tech and features to the 2019 911. The new 911 is more powerful and faster, too.
Porsche has introduced new particulate filters in the exhaust system to meet the new emission norms. The company has also managed to extract 29.6bhp more from the twin-turbo, 3-litre, flat-six engine, taking the total power output to 444bhp. The engine features a new intake system, injectors and intercoolers. The engine is mated to a new twin-clutch 8-speed gearbox. Despite all the changes, the weight of the new 911 is same as that of the outgoing model, with extensive use of aluminium for the outer body.
As a result of all the tweaks, the new 911 accelerates faster to 100kmph as compared to the outgoing model by 0.4 seconds. With the optional sport chrono package, you can further shave off 0.2 seconds. The rear wheel drive coupe accelerates to 100kmph from standstill in 3.7 seconds and the all-wheel drive model does the same thing in 3.6 seconds. Top speed for the 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S are 308kmph and 306kmph respectively.
The body at the front is 45mm wider and the company says that the bonnet with the pronounced recess is inspired from the first 911 generations. The rear looks sharper than before, due to a slim centre section and the inclusion of a full width LED strip, connecting the two rear tail lights. The rear end is now the same width across all 911 models, says the company. The variable position rear spoiler is now wider. The new 911 also gets flush door handles. The wheel arches are wider to accommodate the 20-inch and 21-inch alloy wheels at the front and rear. The twin quad exhaust units are replaced by twin elliptical exhaust units.
On the inside, the centre console is now dominated by a wide 10.9-inch touch screen infotainment system that made its debut in the Panemera. The infotainment system is equipped with navigation options and Porsche Connect Plus. There are five switches below the touch screen system that control different vehicle functions and alter the dynamics.
In a first, Porsche has introduced a Wet mode as standard, to assist the driver in slippery conditions. Other driver aids and safety kit include warning and brake assist to detect collisions. Optional features include night vision with thermal imaging camera, another first for the 911. The adaptive cruise control package with automatic distance control, stop-and-go function, reversible occupant protection and emergency assist is also offered as an option.
