Royal Enfield issues recall orders in UK, Europe and South Korea

The brand has taken this step after reports of brake issues among the Himalayan and 650 duo

Royal Enfield has issued a recall for its Himalayan, Continental GT 650 and Interceptor INT 650 bikes sold in the UK, parts of Europe and South Korea. This decision was taken after brake caliper corrosion-related issues were detected in motorcycles in these specific countries. Upon investigation, this corrosion was found to be due to sustained, long-term exposure to riding on roads treated with certain salts, or a combination of salts, to prevent formation of ice during winters. This corrosion was found to cause damage to the brake calliper piston bore and assemblies, leading to unusual braking sound, increased brake drag, and even reduced braking action.

Despite this issue being reported only in a small number of bikes, Royal Enfield announced a proactive, safety-related service action on the Interceptor INT 650, Continental GT 650 and Himalayan motorcycles sold across the countries where these salts are used to treat roads.

This is a precautionary service intervention, and will be undertaken across the UK, the rest of Europe and South Korea. With immediate effect, around 15,200 motorcycles sold in these markets will be called in for inspection, cleaning and part replacement, if required. In a later phase of the service action, as a preventive measure, the caliper assemblies themselves will be replaced with the improved part, before the end of this year.
