Tata Altroz i-Turbo launched at Rs 7.73 lakh

With the launch of Altroz i-Turbo, Tata Motors is finally has a turbo-petrol car in the premium hatchback segment

Tata Motors recently unveiled the Altroz i-Turbo variant – essentially an Altroz with a turbo-petrol engine. The brand is aiming to explore the enthusiast-focused side of the premium hatchback segment with the new turbo variant, which has an engine borrowed from the Tata Nexon in a lower state of tune. The Altroz iTurbo has just launched in India with prices starting from Rs 7.73 lakh going up to Rs 8.85 lakh. Also, with the i-Turbo variant, the Altroz gets new XZ+ variants in the lineup, available with both the nat-asp petrol and diesel engine as well.

Under the hood, the i-Turbo variant gets a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit that produces 108.5bhp and 140Nm of torque. The i-Turbo variant comes paired to a five-speed manual transmission only, with no official announcement of an automatic transmission variant soon. On the inside, the Altroz i-Turbo gets a semi-digital instrument cluster, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with an eight-speaker system from Harman. Needless to say that Tata Motors has kept the safety in Altroz at priority, which we saw with its 5-star rating in the Global NCAP test.

The Altroz i-Turbo comes with a price tag of Rs 7.73 lakh for the entry-level variant in the turbo-petrol models that goes up to Rs 8.85 lakh for the range-topping variant for the same. Mind you, the Altroz i-Turbo variant is on offer with the XT, XZ and XZ+, that demands a premium of Rs 60,000 over the nat-asp XT, XZ and XZ+ variants. Also, Tata Motors has added an XZ+ variant with a petrol and diesel engine option in the lineup that is on offer at a sticker price of Rs 8.25 lakh and Rs 9.45 lakh respectively. The XZ+ variant adds connected car features, leatherette seats, rear fog lamps and an Xpress Cool feature — which chills the cabin 70 per cent faster according to Tata Motors.

Shailesh Chandra, president, passenger vehicles business unit, Tata Motors said, “We are thrilled to celebrate the first anniversary of our premium hatchback Altroz with a double bonanza comprising of the i-Turbo petrol and the new XZ+ variant with iRA-connected car technology in petrol and diesel option. Since the launch in January 2020, Altroz has been appreciated for its paramount safety, innovative design and thrilling performance and we are delighted to share that with its introduction, in FY 21, our market share in the hatchback category has increased by 5.4 per cent compared to last fiscal and we have captured 17 per cent market share in the premium hatch segment. We are confident that the new Altroz range will cater to the evolving needs of the Indian customer, all while creating benchmarks in the segment.”

The Tata Altroz i-Turbo will go up against the likes of Volkswagen Polo TSI and Hyundai i20 that are on offer at a price of Rs 8.34 lakh and Rs 8.79 lakh respectively for the entry-level turbo petrol variants. This means that, at Rs 7.73 lakh, the Altroz iTurbo is one of the most affordable turbo-petrol hatchbacks in the country.
