Yamaha has launched the MT15, essentially the naked version of the R15 V3.0 in India. The new motorcycle gets a sticker price of Rs 1.36 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. Yamaha has based the MT15 on the latest generation R15. Despite having the same underpinnings, the MT-15 does get a few changes to the swing arm. It also has a taller, wider handlebar to better emphasise the naked street fighter theme.

ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN

Powered by the same liquid-cooled, 155cc, single-cylinder motor, the MT-15 makes 19bhp at 10,000rpm and 14.7Nm at 8500rpm. Leading the entry-level performance pack from the front, it gets a six-speed transmission. The slip and assist clutch, for stress-free gear shifting, is also standard. As per government norms, it gets single-channel ABS as standard. Next, Yamaha has also carried over the Variable Valve Actuation system that actuates the intake valve cams for improved power delivery throughout the rev range. Additionally, the ECU has been retuned as well for maximum low/mid-range performance unlike the R15 V3.0 that is slightly peaky as compared to the MT15. Finally, Yamaha has changed the rear sprocket from 48 teeth to 52 teeth, with Yamaha changing the rake and trail as well to accommodate the changes.

SO HOW MUCH IS IT FOR?

The MT-15 sits comfortably between the FZ25 and R15 V3.0. Yamaha has priced the FZ25 at Rs 1.33 lakh and the R15 at Rs 1.39 lakh. Currently, the KTM 125 Duke, priced at Rs 1.19 lakh, is the only liquid-cooled entry level naked, that costs less than the MT-15. The 200 Duke costs Rs 1.6 lakh, allowing the MT-15 to bridge the gap between the two.
