2019 Audi A6 launched at Rs 54.2 lakh - takes on the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the BMW 5 Series

The new Audi A6 offers a new twin touchscreen layout on the centre console, a mild hybrid system, and a BS6 compliant petrol engine along with a range of luxury features

The 2019 Audi A6 has been launched in India at Rs 54.2 lakh, ex-showroom. While changes on the exterior seem minimal, the eighth generation A6 is quite a step ahead from the outgoing model in terms of luxury and technology offered on the inside. The Audi A6 rivals the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Lexus ES 300h and the Jaguar XF.

The exteriors of the new A6 look marginally sharper and bolder than the outgoing model. The horizontal slat chrome grille is now surrounded in thicker chrome embellishment. Sharp shoulder lines now merge with the tail lamps giving the A6 a unique look. The Matrix LED headlamps with LED DRLs and the new dual tone 18-inch alloy wheels add quite a lot of bling to the overall appeal of the new A6.

It’s on the inside where the new A6 shines. The plethora of buttons on the centre console has now been wiped out by a new twin-touchscreen layout. The upper 10.1-inch touchscreen handles the MMI system while the lower unit takes care of the climate control settings. You also get a massive 12.2-inch full HD screen for the virtual cockpit. That apart, there are many premium features like ambient colour lighting, four-zone air-conditioning, Bang and Olufson premium sound system with 3D sound, wireless charger, 360 degree camera amongst many more.

Powering the new A6

Currently, there’s only one petrol engine on offer. The BS6 compliant 2.0-litre TFSI engine generates 241bhp and 370Nm of torque and is paired to a 7-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission. There’s also a mild hybrid system that according to Audi, allows the car to coast with the combustion engine completely switched off. The combined power propels the A6 to a 100kmph in just 6.8 seconds and the luxury sedan is capable of achieving a top whack of 250kmph.

Commenting on the launch of the new Audi A6, Balbir Singh Dhillion, Head of Audi India, said, “With the launch of the new Audi A6, we are presenting the eighth generation of the successful full size sedan that brings numerous innovations to the segment. It heralds the very best of luxury and technology while also marking the entry of our first BS6 compliant model in the country.”

This is quite an aggressive pricing by Audi India as the eighth generation A6 undercuts the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, and the Lexus ES 300h which start at Rs 58.8 lakh, Rs 59.30 lakh and Rs 59.13 lakh respectively. At Rs 49.78 lakh, the Jaguar XF remains the most affordable of the lot.
