2021 Volkswagen Tiguan launched at Rs 31.99 lakh — now only available with TSI petrol engine

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan comes back with fresher styling, more goodies, and most importantly a turbo-petrol engine

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan was among the four SUVs (or SUVWs if you will) that were showcased at the Auto Expo back in 2020. First launched in 2017, the Tiguan was Volkswagen’s return ticket to the Indian SUV market, and after a brief hiatus, it has been relaunched at a price tag of Rs 31.99 lakh (ex-showroom), clearly targeting the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, and the Stellantis cousins — Compass and C5 Aircross.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Design

The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is a looker for sure — people with a flair for something fresh and yet not too in-your-face will like this car. It gets creases running along the length of the doors and the body is devoid of too many dramatic curves. The front grille is a four-slat chrome unit with the new Volkswagen logo gracing pride of place on the centre, the pulled-back headlamps looks sharper and receive a new design for the DRLs. The 18-inch wheels have been retained and they receive a new Frankfurt design for the alloys. Things at the rear remain pretty much the same as before, save for the LED tail lights with a new DRL pattern and darker treatment. The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan will be offered in seven colours — Nightshade Blue, Pure White, Oryx White, Deep Black, Dolphin Grey, Reflex Silver, Kings Red.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan Powertrain

This is the biggest change in the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan, but given how VW India has switched to a petrol-only lineup, this was going to be a no-brainer. The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan will be available solely with a 2-litre TSI producing 187bhp and 320Nm of torque. The 2-litre TSI engine is paired to a 7-speed DSG gearbox with all-wheel drive as standard. We’ve seen this powertrain in the Tiguan Allspace but this is the first time the 5-seater Tiguan is getting it in India. The Tiguan is built on the MQB-A0 platform, and will be assembled locally.

2021 Volkswagen Tiguan — What equipment do I get?

Speaking of equipment, the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan packs a smart boot with kick function, electrically-adjustable driver seat with memory function, intelligent IQ lighting system with cornering, dynamic bending, 30-colour ambient lighting, illuminated gear shift knob, panoramic sunroof, smartphone connectivity, connected car features with My Volkswagen app, a rough road package, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, reverse parking camera, three-zone climate control, touch sliders for the air-con controls, and a sliding rear bench.

The new Tiguan also packs in quite a bit of safety features too, including a driver alert system, six airbags, hill start assist, hill-descent control, an electronic differential lock, a tyre pressure monitoring system, ABS, auto hold function and ESP.

The new Tiguan will be offered in a sole Elegance variant, with prices starting from Rs 31.99 lakh (all prices ex-showroom). Rivaling the 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan are the likes of the Citroen C5 Aircross (Rs 31.30 lakh), higher variants of the Jeep Compass (Rs 27.19 lakh), and the Hyundai Tucson (Rs 27.47 lakh). Bookings are open, and deliveries are slated to begin from mid-January 2022. If we asked you to pick one out of these, it would be pretty difficult to do based on the strengths and unique qualities of each of these products. Maybe a proper comparison awaits us?
