Mercedes-Benz India launches the G 350 d at Rs 1.5 crore

The G 350 d is the ‘affordable’ offering from Mercedes-Benz India, after the G 63 AMG

On the 40th birthday of the introduction of the original G-Wagen, Mercedes-Benz India has launched the G 350 d at Rs 1.5 crore (ex-showroom), which the brand claims to be the “most efficient G-Class of all time.” The G 350 d is powered by a 2925cc inline-six diesel engine making 282bhp and 600Nm of torque mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, which can propel this massive SUV to 100kmph from standstill in a scant 7.4 seconds.

The Mercedes G 350 d differs from its AMG brethren in many ways, the chief one being its very conceptualisation. Whereas the G 63 AMG has been created to be nothing but a performer, with a 5.5-litre petrol V8 that makes 563bhp and 760Nm of torque, mated to Mercedes seven-speed 7G-Tronic automatic ‘box.

Further, whereas the G 63 AMG uses a 4WD system, the G 350 d uses a revised transfer case connected to Mercedes-Benz’s 4Matic all-wheel drive system, which sends torque to the wheels in a 40:60 front-rear split.

Externally, the G 350 d stays with the usual G-Class aesthetic of an upright, butch off-roader. Based on a ladder type frame, the G 350 d offers typical off-roading characteristics of a proper SUV. In terms of the interiors, almost everything is handmade, allowing for the usage of custom materials such as Nappa leather, tailored to individual specifications.

The Mercedes Benz G 350 d goes up against the Range Rover, BMW X7 and even the 2020 Jeep Wrangler especially when considering its off-road capabilities.
