BMW i3 sedan unveiled globally for 2026

The new BMW i3 has been unveiled and the electric car is the second electric offering from BMW to be a part of the Neue Klasse line-up, following the BMW iX3 which was unveiled last year. The i3 50xDrive is the debut variant for the new electric BMW, with a dual-motor setup and all-wheel-drive, along with up to 900km of WLTP range. While additional variants may roll out later, this all-electric 3 Series stands alone as BMW's first pure-EV take on the iconic sedan, with production to commence at BMW’s plant in Munich from August 2026.

BMW i3 design

The BMW i3 gets a design language that is in-line with what we’ve seen on the iX3, and the electric sedan sports a 2.5-box silhouette with the classic BMW sportiness, a wheelbase of 2,897mm, short overhangs and flared wheel arches that scream wide stance and athletic poise. The ‘shark-nose’ up front dips dynamically toward the road, pulling your eyes to the four-eyed face where the iconic double kidney grille blends with slim twin headlights into a horizontal light signature. In terms of dimensions, the BMW i3 is 4760mm long, 1865mm wide and 1480mm tall – which makes this electric take on the BMW 3 Series longer, wider and taller than the current generation ICE-powered Mercedes-Benz C-Class. At the rear of the BMW i3, the horizontal 3D lights stretch into those muscular shoulders, echoing the L-shaped BMW motif in a fresh, abstract form, while a diffuser underscores the planted, powerful vibe. Opt for the exclusive M Le Castellet Blue metallic paint or the BMW Iconic Glow package and the front grille comes with customizable animations like ‘Balanced’ or ‘Excited’, while the flush door handles pop out via the Digital Key Plus, with the smooth underbody boosting aerodynamic efficiency for a claimed range of up to 900km. The i3 is offered with 11 colour schemes at the time of launch, which include solids, frozens, and metallic colour schemes, along with personalisation options. The i3 is also equipped with 21-inch M Aerodynamic alloy wheels.

BMW i3 interior and features

Step inside and the i3 wraps you in a light-flooded, driver-focused cabin that feels airy yet intimate, thanks to the flat battery floor freeing up space in this electromobility-optimized cabin. Horizontal lines from the dash flow into dynamic door panels, creating a wraparound cockpit, amplified by the optional panoramic roof with climate-comfort glass that brings in natural light.

Sporty seats with electric adjustments and the Travel&Comfort system are offered standard, offering solid lateral support for spirited drives, but an upgrade to the optional Multifunction or M Sport seats in Adelaide Grey is also available for extra support during hard cornering. The centre console hides an inductive charger for your smartphone, a sleek drive selector and other essential buttons, while the electric door openers add futuristic flair. The interior allows you to choose between the Essential Econeer upholstery in Vivid Grey, Contemporary Veganza upholstery in Agave Green or plush BMW Individual Merino leather for a luxurious feel.

The BMW Panoramic iDrive is a game-changer, projecting information across the windscreen between the two A-pillars, while the digital cluster a 17.9-inch curved central display angled 3-degrees towards the driver with an optional 3D Head-Up Display. The controls on the steering wheel only glow up when needed, with haptic feedback as well as drag-and-drop widgets. Saying ‘Hey BMW’ wakes the Intelligent Personal Assistant, now integrated with LLM and Alexa for natural chit-chat, navigation and media, while you can also link your Amazon account for news or for listening to music. You can store up to seven BMW IDs to personalize seats, drive modes like Sport or Expressive and greetings by name. The BMW Operating System X is capable of receiving OTA updates for fresh features, and there are four onboard supercomputers or ‘superbrains’, one of them being the ‘Heart of Joy’ which looks after the driving dynamics. The i3 is also equipped with ‘Symbiotic Drive’, a more sophisticated driver assistance system with Level 2 capabilities, which debuted first on the BMW iX3.

BMW i3 powertrain and performance

Powered by sixth-gen BMW eDrive, the i3 50 xDrive features a dual-motor setup which includes one EESM (electrically excited synchronous) on the rear axle for peak efficiency and torque, paired with a lightweight ASM (asynchronous) up front, delivering a combined output of 463bhp and 645Nm. This powertrain also promises 40 per cent less energy loss, 10 per cent lighter weight, and 20 per cent lower costs compared to the previous generation of BMW electric powertrains. The rear EESM flexes magnetic fields for optimal power at any speed, controlled by a smart inverter, while the robust ASM kicks in for xDrive traction. Meanwhile, the Heart of Joy superbrain reacts 10 times faster for pinpoint handling, precise cornering, and assured agility, while the suspension includes stroke-dependent shocks, a five-link rear axle, and optional adaptive M suspension.

BMW i3 battery and charging

At the heart of the i3 lies the round-cell high-voltage battery which is 46mm in diameter and 95mm in height, boasting a 20 per cent higher energy density than the Gen5 prismatic cells, integrated cell-to-pack for max energy density and a flat profile. The pack-to-open-body of the battery allows it to have a lower centre of gravity and a stiffer chassis. The claimed range is up to 900 km on the WLTP cycle, while being powered by 800V architecture. The i3 supports charging rates up to 400 kW with a DC fast charger, which can top up 400km of range in 10 just minutes. You also get an optional 22kW AC optional, plus bidirectional charging. The i3 is also equipped with V2L (vehicle-to-load), V2H (vehicle-to-home) and which allows it to charge up e-bikes or store power for your home.

BMW executives have mentioned that while the next 3-Series and the i3 will use different platforms, they will share a very similar design aesthetic, and it is very likely that both the all-electric i3 and the next-generation 3 Series will be making their way to India very soon, with the 3 Series going up against its traditional rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Audi A4.
